The story of our cushion textiles

Because of industrialization, weaving with the traditional hand-foot loom is not that common anymore. But there still are a few artisans you can find, who create pieces of amazing quality. It happened that we found some of them in Mexico.

Our cushion covers are made of 100% natural cotton and dyed with natural pigments, then woven using a hand-foot loom.

After carefully selecting premium quality cotton, it is naturally dyed, for which different recipes are used to create different colours. Ingredients can be flowers, insects, the bark of a tree, leaves and stones. The recipes are often kept as a family secret. The thread is then dried in the sun, washed, combed, and prepared for the loom. Threading the loom takes around three days.

Operating this type of loom requires skills and coordination, while the foot pedals (treadles) are pushed in different combinations, one hand moves the beater (part of the loom to put the yarn in place) from front to back, while the other hand goes from left to right and back, making the shuttle (recipient with the crossing yarn) move across the threads.

It is a highly demanding job, where a special technique needs to be carefully executed while maintaining a synchronized rhythm.

Because of this process, as well as the use of natural dyes, there is no uniformity in the colour shades, so every piece will be beautiful, unique, and unrepeatable.
